SingStar: Queen

PS3 review by Mark Johnson on 22nd March 2009

There was a time when all you had to do was have a few number one charting songs to be considered musical legends. To be considered true musical legends now, you need to have films, musicals and of course your own game.

Following in the footsteps of ABBA, Queen have decided to offer a selection of their songs to the SingStar faithful. It’s the perfect partnership of the best karaoke game ever joining forces with the best songs to sing ever; How many times have you heard We Are The Champions at sporting events or belted out Bohemian Rhapsody in the car?

SingStar: Queen offers a choice of 25 of the group’s best songs, featuring classics such as the aforementioned Bohemian Rhapsody and I Want to Break Free. The game plays exactly the same to previous incarnations with players aiming to sing in time and in tune to the music, whilst guided by the lyrics on screen, accompanied by the music video for the song. Anybody looking for new features will be disappointed. As it’s the same as previous titles it also suffers from the same flaws like not actually being able to differentiate between words and noises.

As with , the Queen title is not available with microphones, so another SingStar game is required, either that or you’ll need to buy a set of microphones separately. Where this title does differ is that 15 of the songs from the game are available from SingStar’s SingStore. Interestingly this might actually be the game’s downfall. The reason being is that the songs have been available from the SingStore since October 2008 and so presumably many fans would already own most of the songs already.

SingStar: Queen is clearly just a track pack, offering nothing new to the series. If you’re a fan of the group and don’t already own any of the songs for the game then it may be a worthy purchase. For anybody just wanting their most well known songs, then it’s probably best to save your money and buy the songs from the SingStore.

Seven out of ten

Pros

  • All the Queen classics
  • Wonderful presentation
  • Majority of the songs available from the SingStore

Cons

  • Need to own another SingStar game or buy microphones separately
  • Same old same old

Just wanted to comment that none of the Queen songs are available for download in the US. Finally, US residents can import this disc (which will work on their US PS3s) and enjoy these songs. Be even better if we could get the disc here - but at least we have access to Queen tracks at all now.
