Xbox preview by Paul Kinge - Tuesday 18th February 2003

Well having a good mate that works for Nerve software, I thought this would be a good opportunity to have a go on there new PC to console first person shoot'em up Return To Castle Wolfenstein: Tides Of War.

Everything about this game already looks like a big hit. Great graphics, gameplay and can be accessed online via Xbox LIVE. For those who are new to the series, this game was originally released on the PC. It has however has been completely re-designed for the Xbox. There are new weapons, a new story line and a host of new multiplier maps.

You start the game as B J Blazkowicz, a US ranger who is sent to infiltrate Castle Wolfenstein to face zombies, mutants and the Nazis. This is based around a real obsession that both Heinrich Himmler and Adolf Hitler had with the paranormal.

TOW doesn't present any shocks on the control front but I felt settled in once I picked up the game pad. The controls are similar to Halo and Unreal Championship which makes it a game to get straight into, rather than trying to set up the controls to how you like them. I felt comfortable playing it and was eager to explore further but was only allowed to play one level. I did however get the opportunity to play online and was very happy on how well this had been done. The large maps provided great places for snipers or you dirty people who hide then jump out, but also provided areas to have big battles. One other option that is going to be incorporated into the game is a split screen mode which was not seen in the PC version. I was unable to try this out but if it's anything like the online play then it's something to look forward to.

This game tackles each aspect of gaming that we've seen on the Xbox yet. You have the great game play of Halo put in with the great online play of Unreal Championship. I'm really looking forward to playing the final version and was told it would be in the shops in March or April. I can't wait and neither should you.
