PS3 price to drop…again?

PS3 news by Ben Green, published on Thursday 6th September 2007

Many analysts, including simExchange’s Jesse Divnich and Wedbush Morgan Securities’ Edward Woo and Michael Pachter, recently agreed on a prediction for this holiday season. At E3 this year, the 60 GB PS3 was reduced to $499, but was also announced to be no longer in production. The new 80GB PS3 was introduced at $599, but analysts are predicting a drop before the big holiday season, probably down to the 60GB’s current tag of $499.

Why would Sony need to do this? Well, it’s no secret, the PS3 is behind. It’s being dominated by the other systems, and Sony needs to make some kind of move to change this.

Other analysts are saying that this move might, instead of a price drop, be added features or accessories, but this is unlikely. All evidence is pointing towards a drop of around $100 on the 80GB PS3 before the holidays. The same analysts say that Sony still won’t be done there though, and that another drop early 2008 is also likely, this time to coincide with the release of highly-anticipated and exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, as well as the sure-seller, Grand Theft Auto IV.

For those waiting for a Sony turn-around, the time might be near. With a long-needed price-cut and some great games coming soon, the PS3 might finally start catching up to the competition.
