Check out this press release which arrived in my Inbox this morning.

The world’s favourite cat, Garfield, will be appearing on PlayStation 2 and PC thanks to an agreement between worldwide publisher Hip Games and Jim Davis’ licensing company, Paws, Inc. This agreement comes as a confirmation of Garfield’s ever-growing popularity, indeed this summer 20th Century Fox will launch a live-action Garfield movie starring Jennifer Love Hewitt and Breckin Meyer, with Bill Murray as Garfield’s voice.

The game will hit the shelves this fall, bringing to life Garfield’s universe, complete with comical capers that fans adore. It will also take full advantage of a number of new DVD releases and other key events leading up to its release.

“Everyone at Hip is excited to be working on a game with such a well known and well loved character as Garfield”, said Hip’s Olivier Goulon, “Garfield is a leading franchise and our game’s cachet will benefit this year from the concurrent release of the movie.”

“Seeing Garfield as an interactive 3D character is extremely captivating”, said Garfield’s creator, Jim Davis. ” We are confident that Hip’s know-how will provide for a great Garfield experience for gamers of all ages”.

With the continued success of the comic books, the cartoon, the upcoming movie and now the videogames, Garfield has never been as active on all media.

The launch of the movie will be supported by a massive marketing campaign, with key partners in both North America and Europe for licensing and promotions.

The last time Bill Murray did the voice-over for a cartoon was a bizarre animated sex-comedy called Jungle Burger. My how times change…
