EA recycles Orange Box

PC news by Calvin Kemph, published on Saturday 2nd February 2008

Yesterday was a good day for EA. As Valve’s partner in retail distribution, they’ve successfully pushed one million copies of Orange Box across three platforms as of the companies third fiscal quarter. Now that the “value-package” has been deemed platinum, it’s time to make with the re-releasing and start milking Valve’s masterpiece via unnecessary individual releases.

Good news for anyone who refused to pick up the Orange Box due to its overwhelming portion of quality gaming. Before long, you’ll be able to relive the joy of purchasing Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode 2, Team Fortress 2, and Portal all over again. Noticeably absent from the announced self-packaged titles is Half-Life 2: Episode 1. Although it’s absence is questionable, it can be already be purchased and downloaded along with each of the aforementioned games through Valve’s online distribution service, Steam.

What’s so good about owning a five-in-one-installment package, when you could purchase each one individually? Although I personally felt guilty for getting away with such a steal, and noted that releasing such a value-filled package was an asinine business strategy, it doesn’t seem like there’s any particular demand to purchase less content for what will ultimately be a larger all together sum of money.
