Sniper Rose
04-22-2003, 05:07 PM

Phil
04-22-2003, 05:10 PM
yeah, or the actual network near you.

fibre optic is the fastest connection possible - it's the speed of light. the highest they've got it so far is 923 Mbps, only 923 times faster than yours

Mega_Hurtz
04-22-2003, 07:19 PM
hey wait, i have it too (blueyonder 1megabit)
but my skool have three servers with 2mb connections running togther (loads of stuff) and it runs at about 1.5 mega bytes per second  (standard mp3 track 2.5 megabytes) (not megabit)
if u inquire to blueyonder u can get 2mb as it is for buisnesses!

I only have a stinkin 1 Mb from NTL because it is only them or BT over here  I looked into getting more, but no luck, NTL are Beta testing the 2Mb one, but it's upload speed is only 500Kb/sec

But it is a step up from my 256 upload speed, although i can host 8 peeps with no greandes

Phil
04-22-2003, 09:35 PM
Yeah, Mega Hurtz, your school will have an 8Mb ADSL connection I'm guessing. That's the max ADSL can handle. Shame it's still only 256Kpbs upload :?

PsychoticAbyss
04-22-2003, 10:00 PM
IT MAY NOT B THE FASTEST BUT ITS GOOD ENOUTH IT COULD PROBALY HOLD ABOUT 12 WITH OUT LAGGING ON GHOST RECON SO IF U WNT ME OR MEGA HURTZ 2 HOST THE PRACTICES MATCHES THEN I WILL. PSYCHO. :sniper: :maxpayne: :silly:

Cool, I also have telewest 1 meg (megaBIT per second) connection, but unfortunately shared between 4 of us in this flat :(

When the other guys use Kazaa, I have restricted the upload bandwidth, because this is more important for games. Anyway, apparently Microsoft recommend you have 128 kbps (kiloBIT per second) upload and download speeds. You can check your speeds here:

http://www.adslguide.org.uk

You need to run the speed test a few times and get an average as it fluctuates a bit.

With one mate downloading and uploading I get about 850 KBITpersec download speed and 130 KBITpersec upload speed.

GR runs fine with this.

You can also check from the X-Box Live dashboard. Go to the Live section of the dashboard, choose the last option, can't remember the name, then hit "connect", it goes through a few checks etc, when they are done, press "Y". This undocumented feature allows you to see the download and upload speed. For some reason my download speed was quoted as anywhere between 1000 and 3000 KBIT per sec (!??!!), the upload speed was a little different to my earlier tests, I got more like 110 KBit per sec, wierd. I think you only need the recommended 128 value for hosting though, as long as I don't host I should be fine. I'd be interested to see all your guys speed test values.

Also I get a ping of about 150 I think. Apparently as long as you are below 300 it is fine.

I might get on the horn to Telewest though, get them to run some speed tests of their own, might get my bandwidth boosted/tweaked a little if I shout enough!

I have hosted games of gr before and managed 12 with no lag!!

Mega_Hurtz
04-23-2003, 12:56 PM
for the test i got:

Downstream 986 Kbps (123.3 KB/sec) 1064 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Upstream 241 Kbps (30.1 KB/sec) 260 Kbps (inc. overheads)

not bad, somtimes it's alot more!

Phil
04-23-2003, 01:17 PM
12 with no lag on 256 ul? You were extremely lucky!

If you're hosting people around the world, then you'll probably only be able to host 8 in GR.

Phil
05-13-2003, 05:36 PM
Yeah it should do. I thought the fibre optic connection was the fastest.

Yes, fibre optic is physicaly the fastest internet connection you can possibly have. The reason? The data travels at the speed of light, and nothing can go faster 8)

The world record was broken recently, and now stands at 938Mbps

Jay
05-13-2003, 05:55 PM
Right now, I've got a half functional BT line connected @ 28k/bps cos my line just blew up!!!

It started hailstoning and then this lil box where my line comes in went BANG

Now I'm waiting for an engineer to come and sort it the **** out!!! :(

I keep harassing NTL when they are going to upgrade to a 2Mb line, they are slippery as a fish. When the 2Mb line comes out i think i will get it, as long as it is under £60 a month :P

ultragladiator
05-15-2003, 08:23 PM

Ives
06-05-2003, 10:37 PM
3mb oh my god

Phil
06-06-2003, 08:44 AM
We want the same upload as download!!! There's no point in getting 3MB download if you can only get 256k upload!

The King
06-07-2003, 10:32 AM
Exactly. Not alot of people relise that it is your UPLOAD speed determines how fast and how many people you can host on Xbox LIVE

PsychoticAbyss
06-15-2003, 12:44 PM
What so only your upload counts when ur on LIVE/

Phil
06-15-2003, 12:46 PM
Yes.

512 download, 512 upload is far better than 1024 download, 256 upload for gaming.

PsychoticAbyss
06-15-2003, 01:04 PM
Ok then il stick to my 1mb then.
