Interview: NoMoreAOLCDs.com

feature by Philip Morton - Tuesday 25th November 2003

We've got Jim McKenna here today to tell us all about his website, NoMoreAOLCDs.com.

So tell us a bit about NoMoreAOLCDs.com

NoMoreAOLCDs.com is a way for everyone who does not like, want, or request AOL cds to have their voice heard. Collectively, we are saying "you've made your point; stop it!" rather loudly. We are trying in a friendly way to have AOL recognize that sending out hundreds of millions of cds is unnecessary.

The vast majority get thrown away and they take over 400 years to degrade once buried. Additionally, we want the right as people to be able to tell an organization "do not ever send me your materials again; I'll let you know when I want them". Nothing stops you and your address from receiving the cds over and over and over again.... Along the way, we want everyone to have some laughs too.

Sounds like a noble crusade, what made you start it?

John (a.k.a. GrandHighPoobah) and I work in I.T. We get AOL CDs all the time from magazines, mailings, ordering equipment, etc. Between the two of us, in one week we had received something like 6 of these buggers. Then one Friday we decided to hook up after work and rent a movie. At the store which only rents blockbuster type movies, the clerk secretly put another AOL cd in our bag. This was discovered on the way to John's house. To our chagrin, John found another AOL CD in his mailbox. So, that made 8 in a week and we thought "someone ought to do something about this....". 7 minutes later, we registered the URL in July of 2000 and the rest is history.

AOL aren't the most popular of ISPs, do you have anything against them or is it just their CDs?

Just their unwanted CDs. We have nothing against AOL, their product, or those that use their service. Our sole intent is to have them stop sending our unrequested hard to recycle cds. We'd love for them to set the industry standard by stopping this practice and challenging others to do so as well.

Where do you keep all those CDs while they're waiting to be sent back to
AOL?!

They are kept at the ultra high secret storage facility, GrandHighPoobah's backyard.

Ha ha. You've just got over 250,000 CDs. How long do you think it will be until you have the full million?

Excellent question. Three things increase the numbers of cds we receive. One, media attention. (thank you) Two, organized efforts like University mailrooms and recycling centers. And three, every time AOL comes out with a new version as it makes their last version garbage bound. We get tens of thousands at a pop every time they come out with a new version. As for when we will hit the million mark, "soon".

When you have the full million, will your crusade be over? Do you think
you will have achieved your goal?

Once we have the full million, it will be time to drive them back to their rightful owner and make our point in person and with the physical evidence. We'll be doing this in broad daylight and let everyone we can know about it. As for achieving our goal, we think so. We will have brought a lot of attention to this issue without resorting law suits. We'll call that a win.

Finally, how are you going to get them back to AOL?

Our plan now is to drive them there. We need either 18 one ton pickup trucks or a semi. We suspect we will be leading a large convoy of interested parties.

Thank you for your time and good luck
