Interview: Clash

Xbox feature by Philip Morton - Friday 16th January 2004

Clash.cc is an online tournament website for Xbox Live gamers in partnership with GamertagDatabase.com. We've got Clash's director, Cynn, here with us today to tell us a bit more about it.

So tell us a bit about Clash.cc

The Clash is here to allow you to challenge the world and earn some respect for yourself and your hobby. We are a fully functioning tournament and event service that's here to give you some great times.

What gave you the idea to start Clash?

I grew up in the arcade era of gaming. Those glorious early 90's with the prizefighting youth of the world fighting tooth and nail for nothing more than the community and honor of being part of the movement. When that culture started dying it ripped me up. I had to preserve our way of life. The Clash does this.

You've teamed up with Gamertag Database. It is only their users who can play?

Yes we are only working with GTDB members. It's no exclusive club though. Anyone can sign up! Once you are a member of the GTDB you'll soon see why exactly we demanded their level of quality for member services.

What games will you be starting out with?

Rainbow Six 3, Project Gotham 2, Jedi Academy and Crimson Skies!

How does the prize system work and what can we expect to win?

The prize system is based off of point collection and spending. When you play in Clash events you earn points. (Event winners get additional and instant prizes as well as points.) These points are then traded for prizes of your choice in the Prize Claim that's coming soon. What sort of things can you get? Games, gear, clothes, you name it.

How is Clash economically sustainable if you're giving out prizes and not charging anyone to play?

I personally trained a crack squad of midget sumo wrestlers who sneak in and steal from houses that are left unprotected due to the owners playing in Clash events. These guys are GOOD. We also have other more traditional ways of getting the rent, but that's a private matter. All that really counts is that we don't charge the players for our service.

So how does it work at your end? Do you have a set of Xboxes plugged into some really high speed connections?

Yes indeed! We have an office dedicated to the Clash that features several high speed terminals and live judges on event nights. Our tournaments are very much in the spirit of public events. We all get together and battle it out in real time. This is not some low involvement middleware PC program thing. This is real and live.

How will PS2 'clashing' differ?

I'd love to say... But I can't right now.

When will we see Clash launching?

We have already launched for our early adopters. We were surprised that we almost ran out of space in the first three days though! All future Clash events will be much bigger.

Finally, will we see you in Clash games?

I'd love to, but seeing how I own the Clash, it's best I don't partake. I would end up beating pretty much everyone and when I was ready to gloat, I’d get too much flack from people wanting to think I cheated. You will be able to challenge all of your favorite GTDB staff and contributors though. Perhaps at times I will be seen in the competition though. Just keep an ear to the ground.

Good luck with Clash and thank you for your time.

Thank you! Always love to talk games! Be sure to join us!
