The PS3 Cell infiltrates the Games Developer Conference

The internal design of the third Sony console is set to make an appearance at this week’s Games Developer Conference.

The Cell, the basis of the PlayStation 3’s architecture, will apparently use 72 processors on top of one another which, using a cell microprocessor to co-ordinate the power, will produce the same processing capabilities as 100 PCs. Yes, that could be anywhere between 70GHz and 300GHz!!!

There are still technical hurdles to overcome, but Sony, Toshiba and IBM are confident they can make the necessary breakthroughs to start production on the chips in time for the expected 2005 release.
