Rockstar throws a wobbly over EA’s GTA parody

Grand Theft Auto

For a company that has made millions from parodies, such as Jack Thompson, American culture and an LA gentleman’s club, it’s somewhat surprising to find that Rockstar are reportedly unhappy at EA’s new title The Simpsons.

Talking to CVG, lead designer on The Simpsons Greg Rizzer said:

I was always under the impression that when you do parody, it’s a sign of respect… If we make fun of Grand Theft Auto, we’re not going to hurt the sales of Grand Theft Auto… But yeah, we’ve definitely had some reactions – we’ve had to pull stuff from the game.

EA’s poster to promote their game shows what we believe to be a level from the game, and it’s now unclear as to whether it has now been pulled thanks to stroppy Rockstar. Greg believes that it’s more down to one person, possibly a lawyer than the entire company, adding:

I don’t know who specifically at Rockstar. I’m guessing probably more than anyone it was a lawyer. The people who work on that product, I doubt they were like, ‘Stop that!’

Either way, I’m still going to call them hypocritical bastards. I’m guessing that’s our review copy of Grand Theft Auto IV out of the window, right?
