PS2 goes to China

According to Bloomberg, Sony plans to sell Playstation 2 in mainland China later this year. The company is pending approval from the Chinese government and regional authorities to market console and software.

“We are planning to start selling the products in China as soon as we obtain approval by authorities over the summer through winter this year,” Sony Computer spokesperson Koichiro Katsurayama said. Sony already sells PS2s in Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea.

Previously console makers have shied away from selling hardware and software in China due to prevalent piracy. Katsurayama says that the Chinese government’s effort to end piracy are bearing fruit and the situation is improving.
