MS pulls the plug on True Fantasy Online

Weíve waited and waited and waited some more for Microsoft to finally deliver the amazing looking MMORPG, True Fantasy Online, and it looks as if itíll have all been for nothing. In a press release issued earlier today from Microsoftís Japanese games division, the company stated that the project has been officially cancelled. The game was in development for over two years and was touted as being a key element in Microsoft getting Japanese gamers to sign up for their Xbox Live gaming service.

When asked about the shocking cancellation, Microsoft responded with the following statement: “The difficult decision to cancel True Fantasy Live Online was based on a number of careful considerations, including the game’s progression to date and the remaining development time needed to complete such an ambitious project. The MMORPG genre, across all platforms, has become an incredibly crowded and competitive marketplace. In response, Microsoft Game Studios has decided to streamline its portfolio, making fewer bets in this genre.”

My oh my. It looks like Xbox gamers will have to wait even longer for a MMORPG or jump over to the PC where there are plenty of online role-players available.
