Hackers beware

The All Party Internet Group, a committee of MPs and Peers, has proposed tough new punishments for computer related crime.

The group, which goes under the unfortunate acronym APIG, has asked that maximum prison sentances be quadrupled to two years and that denial of service attacks be codified as a specific offence. They also called for clearer guidlines for prosecutions under the Computer Misuse Act and for the government to increase the amount of information documented on cybercrime.

The Home Office have made it clear that they intend to look at the Computer Misuse Act and bring forward amendments, as well as take APIG’s recommendations under advisement.

Whether this will seriously have any impact on the fast moving world of computer crime or not is anyones guess, especially regarding the seriously grey issue of making personal backups…
