EA secures NFL Matchup sponsorship

EA Sports has taken over the title sponsorship of ESPN’s NFL preview and news show NFL Matchup. The show will incorporate sequences from the most recent edition of EA’s flagship football franchise, Madden NFL 2004. These clips will be used to demonstrate individual matchups, techniques, and plays relevant to that week’s games. The NFL began play this week, and the season continues through January.

EA’s sponsorship of the weekly program will certainly help Madden strengthen its lead over its main competitor, Sega Sports. Sega also has close ties with ESPN, and has designed recent additions to its football and hockey franchises to resemble an ESPN broadcast during play. The two sports-game powers obviously conflict on this front, but ESPN’s agreement with Sega apparently does not prevent other developers from sponsoring programs.
