380 PS3 titles promised in Japan by March 2008

Japan

Kaz Hirai, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., has said in an interview to the Japanese Nikkei newspaper that we can expect 200 software titles and 180 download-only titles to be released for the struggling PS3 before next March.

There are currently around 60 software titles and 50 PlayStation Network titles available for the PS3. Although there are some excellent-looking games on the way, such as Heavenly Sword, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and, of course, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, it remains to be seen how many of these 380 titles will be available outside of Japan (if, indeed, such an impressive total is met in such a short period).

Sony is counting on games like Metal Gear Solid 4 (above) to sell the PS3.
Latest figures from Media Create reveal that in Japan Sony’s latest console is receiving what’s known in the industry as a ‘trouncing’, with the PS3 selling just 8776 units for the week ended 10th June, compared to the Wii’s 64,529. According to game magazine publisher Enterbrain and research firm NPD the Wii is outselling the PS3 in Japan by around 3-1 so far this year, and in America by 2-1 in the same period.
